Hamburg Strengthens Culture: Over 1 Million Euros More for the Independent Performing Arts

Dear members, dear friends of the DfdK,

In the midst of the numerous worrying news from cultural policy across Germany, there is a positive signal from Hamburg: the budget resolution of the city parliament provides for an 11% increase in the cultural budget. Of this, over 1 million euros will flow directly into the funding pots for the independent performing arts in Hamburg in the 2025/2026 financial year, which will already have an impact on the current funding round.

At a time when funding for the independent performing arts is being cut elsewhere, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is making an explicit commitment to the independent performing arts as an indispensable part of its cultural landscape with this decision. This additional funding significantly improves the prospects for the independent performing arts community and sends an important cultural policy signal: the independent performing arts community embodies the central values of a pluralistic society and makes a significant contribution to responding creatively and critically to the challenges of the present and future.

The increase is the result of years of joint work. Many of our demands, which are based on Alexandra Manske's reporthave had an impact and were specifically taken into account when the individual funding areas were increased. You, the members, were instrumental in this by emphasizing the urgency of the issues with your ideas and intensive campaign work and by strengthening the visibility and needs of the independent performing arts in politics.

Many thanks to all of you and to the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media for making this increase in funding possible. Detailed information on the increases in the various areas will be announced in the new year. We will of course keep you up to date!

Let's celebrate this success and use the energy to take further steps towards balanced, sustainable and fair funding for the independent scene - in Hamburg and beyond. But for now, let's take a winter break, recharge our batteries - and carry on together in the new year!

Have a happy new year,

Your board
